The Constantia Glen Winery – the Origin of our Wines

Our journey to South Africa took us to the origin of our wines: the Constantia Glen Winery. Enjoy excellent wines at the ALTITUDE Bar. Find out more!

From time to time we head off to expand our horizons. We also use these opportunities to learn about interesting producers, winemakers or food concepts. Afterwards, we are proud to present these new products at our ALTITUDE Bar!

One of our recent journeys took us to South Africa: to the Constantia Glen Winery. The area of the Constantia vineyards is located between the Table Mountain and the Constantiaberg. Constantia is a suburb in the South of Cape Town.

Our Journey through South Africa: home of excellent wines

Our South Africa adventure began in Johannesburg. After several days of safari our tour took us to the edge of the Kruger National Park. Then we went through Port Elisabeth and the Garden Route towards Cape Town. There, we visited the famous South African wine regions such as the Stellenbosch Winery and the Franschhoek Winery.

We were deeply impressed by these quite different wine regions. Among those was the Hemel-en-Aarde region, which is characterized by a rather cool climate. The region is located within approximately one hour from Cape Town and the Garden Route. You can practically taste the vicinity to the sea in the typical local white wines.

Special tip: We recommend the Hop on Hop off-Tour that will take you from winery to winery. This way you will also be able to taste a few more glasses of wine.
If you have already visited South Africa, you will agree that the diverse landscape is breathtaking. Cape Town is a fascinating, vibrant city with beautiful areas. There is an endless range of exceptional restaurants with trendy new food concepts. It was impossible to test everything in just seven days. It seems we need to come back another time!

The Constantia Glen Winery in South Africa

The most renowned vineyards of the country are located all around the Drakenstein. Each of these wineries offers wine tastings. Some of them also have an excellent restaurant on the premises – right in the heart of the vineyards!

Our primary destination, however, was the Constantia Glen Vineyards. At the recommendation of a good friend, we had already offered the Constantia wines on our wine menu, even before our journey. We embarked on our journey to the origin of our wines with hopes of finding out more about the production of the wine. We also wanted to learn more about the philosophy of the Constantia Glen Winery.

Upon our arrival we received a hearty welcome by the vineyard manager who showed us around the vineyards and the winery. Constantia Glen is a relatively young vineyard estate where vines have been cultivated only since 2000. For the production of white wine, the winery uses the grape varieties Sauvignon blanc and Semillon. For the gorgeous red wine, classic Bordeaux grape varieties are used: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot. There is a total of four wines pressed at the Constantia Glen winery:

➢ White wine:

  • Sauvignon blanc
  • Constantia Glen TWO

➢ Red wine:

  • Constantia Glen THREE
  • Constantia Glen FIVE (The numeration refers to the amount of grape varieties used to produce the wine.)

The tasting room is located within the vineyards and offers a sensational view of the region, the vine area and the ocean. Here you can taste (and of course buy) all four wine types. You can also order your favorite wine at the restaurant along with a nice cheese platter and delicious dried meat. This way the aroma of the wine can fully develop – and you can enjoy the wine properly.

Special tip: If you want to develop a decent appetite, we recommend that you climb the Table Mountain by foot. Afterwards, you can reward yourself by feasting at the Constantia Winery.

Constantia Wine: an excellent choice!

Having visited the Constantia Glen winery we concluded that we have selected an excellent South African Wine. We are happy and proud to offer you – our guests – this wine, which is produced with love and care.
